First appearing in 1930, Max Fleischer modeled Betty Boop after Helen Kane, a 1920's singer and the depression era actress Clara Bow. Boop was perhaps the first overtly sexual cartoon character, becoming a cultural icon and precursor to the feminist movement despite being toned down by 1930s censor board.
